John woo once a thief11/22/2023 ![]() ![]() This is for only die hard John Woo fans and only they will be disappointed by the awfulness here. A Hong Kong crime family consists of two adopted siblings. This is a very dull movie and the action sequences would be good had they not been botched beyond belief, Woo films no suspense and somehow the movie just keeps going for a ridiculous amount of time. Telefilm based on the 1991 feature film of the same title written and directed by John Woo. Sergei in particular is a charisma-less lunkhead who seems to have wandered in from a stoner commercial. ![]() Also it takes talent to be an action star, Chow Yun Fat, Jean-Claude Van Damme,John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, Dolph Lundgren and even Christan Slater are far more credible than our teen leads which never convince us that they would do anything but crap their pants when the guns went off. This is an original, single-sided, 26 X 40 movie poster for the home video release of John Woos made-for-TV movie version of Once A Thief, which served. ![]() It becomes so soap operish in it's moronic threads involving the three leads that I for one was hoping somebody would put a bullet in all three of them. The main problem with this movie is just how much it feels like Melrose Place with two guns. Once A Thief however is a sub-par take on Woo's own original and although I haven't seen it yet, one doubts it is as bad as this stinker. Blackjack believe it or not has it's merits, it was plot heavy but it featured some good action and decent thesping in making for at least a tolerable movie. This and Blackjack were regarded as Woo's worst movies. Before Woo stunk up the multiplexes with Mission Impossible 2, Windtalkers and Paycheck. However, Woo takes us on a long journey with some unsuspecting turns and twists that I did not expect. The premise is very 70s caper movie, a heist, a plan, a bad guy and the players. Lots to savour, but difficult to take seriously.John Woo directs a TV drama about a couple of thieves (Ivan Sergei and Sandrine Holt) who escape to Canada after dishonoring their former boss in Hong Kong, however Sergei is caught by the cops and comes to Canada after his time only to find Holt and Lea in a relationship their soap opera antics must wait while assassin Michael Wong looks to do in our trio out of revenge for their disloyalty. Telefilm based on the 1991 feature film of the same title written and directed by John Woo. Rather than the usual Chow Yun Fat/John Woo Kill everything and then some movie, I was pleasantly surprised to watch this fun and seet movie. Once a Thief might not be as tight tonally as Woos best work, but it is still a blast from start to finish. (more than half of this heist comedy takes place in France). Once a Thief is part ‘Indiana Jones’-style heist flick, part ‘Jules and Jim’-type movie-throw in Woo’s heroic bloodshed and a tinge of Jackie Chan-style kung fu comedy, and you get an equivalent of a messy buffet spread. Whoa, I never knew that John Woo had made an European movie before he headed out to the U.S. The film’s jarring tonal shifts-from hardcore action where lives are at stake to casual, nonchalant comedy, often in the middle of the action-is either a showcase of Woo’s versatility (not quite to me), or a last resort to make the movie more audience-friendly. There is a subplot involving flashbacks and ‘fathers’, biological or otherwise, but while it advances the narrative considerably, it doesn’t really work dramatically. Cherie Chung plays the pretty lady in between the two men in a loose love triangle setup. Together with Leslie Cheung, Chow plays a master thief of rare art paintings, where they team up to deliver the ‘goods’ to rich-paying clients. “Did I make you waste your tears over me?” The result is rather pretentious, and nobody would exemplify this more than Chow Yun-Fat whose performance borders on the ludicrous in the final act. It is light-hearted for sure but still sufficiently in heroic bloodshed mode that Woo is famous for e.g. Once a Thief is best seen as an action-comedy, a hybrid undertaking that unfortunately doesn’t really go anywhere. Once a thief: Brother Against Brother (1996) e una variante del seguito di Once A Thief, ed e una puntata pilota per una serie televisiva, fallita sia come commedia che come film dazione. Once a Thief is entertaining but it is not vintage John Woo, although it had much more box-office success than his previous two directorial outings in The Killer(1989) and Bullet in the Head(1990), thus paving way for him to make his final pre-Hollywood movie, Hard Boiled(1992).
